Scent and Structure: Spring Highlights

When I’m out on-site, I often find that people get very caught up in how a garden looks. While the visual side is obviously a huge part of what I do, I always try to remind my customers about the importance of scent. A garden that smells as good as it looks is a much more enjoyable place to be.

I’ve recently been taking some photos of the Lilacs and Rhododendrons I’ve been working with, and the display this year is fantastic. What I like about this lot is that you get a real profusion of flowers, but you also get that heavy fragrance that follows you across the garden.

My Thoughts on These Varieties

  • Lilacs: These are a classic for a reason. They give you a massive hit of colour and a honey-sweet scent that really tells you spring has arrived.

  • Rhododendrons: These are great for adding structure. You get those bold, bright blooms, but because they are evergreen, they keep the garden looking full and green even through the winter months.

A Quick Tip for Your Own Garden

If you are thinking about adding scented plants to your borders, my advice is to think carefully about where you put them. I always suggest planting them near a path, a doorway, or a seating area. There isn't much point in having a beautiful fragrance if it’s tucked away in a far corner where you never get to enjoy it.

It’s these simple considerations—getting the right plant in the right spot—that turn a standard garden into a proper retreat.
